Messi at the World Cup 2026: The GOAT's Final Tournament

Lionel Messi will turn 39 the day after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. After lifting the trophy in Qatar 2022, the GOAT debate ended for most fans. The 2026 tournament is almost certainly his last — and Argentina's chance to make it back-to-back.

The setup: defending champions, expanded bracket

Argentina enter the 2026 World Cup as defending champions and FIFA #3. They're drawn into Group J with Algeria, Austria, and Jordan — a relatively soft path through the group stage. The new Round of 32 format adds an extra game but also more chances to ease through the early rounds.

On paper, this is the easiest start Messi has had since 2018.

What Messi can still do at 38-39

He's no longer pressing. He's no longer the focal striker. But what he is, in 2026:

  • The set-piece taker. Argentina won the 2022 final partly on his free kicks and corners. That hasn't aged.
  • The penalty specialist. He's converted 9 of his last 10 international penalties.
  • The big-moment finisher. He scored in every knockout match in 2022. Pattern, not coincidence.
  • The passer. His through-ball numbers are still elite by any measure.

The supporting cast — better than Qatar

Argentina's squad is somehow deeper than 2022:

  • Lautaro Martínez — Inter striker, Serie A top scorer, 31 in 2026. Peak.
  • Julián Álvarez — Atlético Madrid forward, 26. Big-game player who scored in the 2022 final.
  • Alexis Mac Allister — Liverpool midfielder, the tactical conductor.
  • Enzo Fernández — Chelsea midfielder, 25, peak tournament age.
  • Alejandro Garnacho — Manchester United winger, 22, the wildcard X-factor.
  • Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez, Nahuel Molina — defense as solid as 2022.

The bracket path

Group J winner faces a 3rd-place wildcard team in the Round of 32 — a soft draw. Round of 16 likely against a Group K runner-up (Colombia or Portugal). The quarterfinal is where the real test starts: probably France or Brazil.

If Argentina avoid Brazil until the semis, the final at MetLife could be Argentina vs Spain or Argentina vs France — a rematch of the iconic 2022 final.

Bracket strategy: how to play Messi/Argentina in your pool

  • Don't pick Argentina to lose in the group stage. Group J is too weak. Pick them 1st in Group J as chalk.
  • Argentina to the semis is the median pick. You'll find half the pool there — not a differentiator.
  • Argentina champion is a defensible bold pick. They're defending champs and the bracket is favorable. Picking them 1 of 5 typical favorites is fine.
  • Don't pick Argentina out before the QF.The team that lost at home to Saudi Arabia in 2022 is a different team now. They're experienced, deep, and tactically flexible.

The narrative if Argentina win

Back-to-back World Cups would put Messi alone in the "greatest ever" conversation. Pelé won three but two while a teenager. Maradona won one. Messi already won 2022 — winning 2026 closes the case beyond any doubt and ends his international career on the ultimate high.

The narrative if they don't

Messi at 39 in his last tournament going out to a younger France or Spain side would still be the most-watched moment of the tournament. Either way, this is the storyline that defines World Cup 2026.
