Top 10 Players to Watch at World Cup 2026

The 2026 World Cup may be the most star-studded in history. Veteran legends in their final tournament. New generation phenoms entering their peak. Here are the 10 players who will define the tournament — for your watch list and your bracket.

1. Kylian Mbappé 🇫🇷 (France, age 27)

The world's best player at his peak age. World Cup top scorer in 2022 (8 goals including a final hat-trick). France favored to win it all, and Mbappé is the engine. Bracket angle: if France lift the trophy, Mbappé is almost certainly the Golden Boot winner.

2. Lamine Yamal 🇪🇸 (Spain, age 18)

Already a Euros winner and Champions League player at Barcelona. Will be 18-19 at his first World Cup. The closest thing the world has to peak Messi from a tactical and technical perspective. Spain win or lose this World Cup partly on Yamal.

3. Jude Bellingham 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (England, age 22)

Real Madrid's big-game player. England's tactical center of gravity. Already scored a knockout goal at Euro 2024 from the bicycle kick. If England finally win their first World Cup since 1966, Bellingham is the reason.

4. Lionel Messi 🇦🇷 (Argentina, age 38-39)

The defending champion. This is almost certainly his last World Cup. Read our full Messi at WC2026 piece— the GOAT's last tournament.

5. Florian Wirtz 🇩🇪 (Germany, age 23)

Bayern Munich's creative midfielder. Germany's last proper #10 since Mesut Özil. The team is rebuilt around Wirtz + Musiala. If Germany are going to win it (they're a sleeper), Wirtz is the conductor.

6. Vinícius Jr. 🇧🇷 (Brazil, age 26)

Real Madrid's left winger. Will be Brazil's primary attacker. Pace, creativity, and a mature understanding of when to beat defenders 1v1 vs combine. Brazil's ceiling is tied to Vinícius' form.

7. Erling Haaland 🇳🇴 (Norway, age 26)

Manchester City's machine. His first World Cup — Norway have never qualified in the modern era. Norway are in Group I with France, and Haaland will be the most-watched striker not on a favorite.

8. Achraf Hakimi 🇲🇦 (Morocco, age 27)

PSG's right-back, captain of Africa's best team. Morocco reached the 2022 semifinals largely because of Hakimi. They're in Group C with Brazil — a Hakimi-vs-Vinícius matchup is the must-watch group game of the tournament.

9. Son Heung-min 🇰🇷 (South Korea, age 33)

The Asian footballer of the generation, in what's likely his final World Cup. South Korea reached the Round of 16 in 2022 and the Asian Cup semis in 2024. Son is the captain and the player who decides whether Korea cracks the QFs for the first time since 2002.

10. Alejandro Garnacho 🇦🇷 (Argentina, age 22)

The wildcard. Manchester United's left winger, born in Spain, plays for Argentina. Could be a peripheral super-sub or could emerge as the breakout player of the tournament. Argentina's Mbappé-equivalent if everything clicks.

Honorable mentions

  • Cristiano Ronaldo 🇵🇹 (Portugal, age 41) — sixth and final World Cup. Cameo role, but every minute is must-watch.
  • Kevin De Bruyne 🇧🇪 (Belgium, age 35) — last tournament for the golden generation that never won.
  • Cole Palmer 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿(England, age 23) — Chelsea's set-piece taker, England's X-factor.
  • Mohamed Salah 🇪🇬 (Egypt, age 33-34) — last shot at making a real World Cup run.
  • Pedri 🇪🇸(Spain, age 23) — Spain's metronome, if healthy.

How to use this for your bracket

Pick teams whose stars are at peak age (24-29) and whose squads complement them. Ronaldo's Portugal is sentimental, but Mbappé's France is structurally a more reliable bet. Yamal's Spain is the same story.

The 5 most important players for picking a champion correctly: Mbappé, Yamal, Bellingham, Messi, Vinícius. Pick the team whose star you most believe in.
